The Gachagua Impeachment Vote

When it came to it, the impeachment vote against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on 8 October was decisive in the house, with 44 voting against, 281 in favour, 1 abstention and only 18 absent (many tactically). Apart from his allies in Nairobi and Central Province, Gachagua's main defenders were the Wiper MPs, who had recently done a deal to back him, as a first step to a new political arangement as ODM moved closer to UDA. Elsewhere, there were few ready to speak for him.

Any preliminary thoughts on Ruto's chances in 2027?

If what happened in mid 2024 is anything to go by, there's substantial (vocal) opposition to his regime, perhaps at a level we haven't seen since the days of Moi. Mostly in the < 30 demographic that people claim usually doesn't vote.

I thought then that there were indications that the usual ethnic census model might not quite apply in 2027, but I'm no longer sure about this.

Ruto is regarded as the smartest politician we have had around for some time, also by far most hard working. Also, his financial war chest will probably break records. Meaning that it will not be easy for him to be dislodged.

Will things really be different this time? Has Ruto really lost the Mt. Kenya bloc? Will his alliance with Raila yield results? Could Raila pull a "2002" i.e jump ship at the last minute?
